News alert for fans of Fountains of Wayne: the alt-rock quartet has wrapped up a 14-track album of guitar-driven neo-psychedelia and retro-pop rife with intriguing characters ranging from an assassin target and department of motor vehicles clerk to a pair of lusty newscasters.
Stay tuned for Traffic and Weather, due April 23 on Virgin. Travel is the chief thematic vehicle in such tunes as 92 Subaru, Seatbacks and Traytables, Fire in the Canyon and Michael and Heather at the Baggage Claim.
The band, formed in 1996 by Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood, was nominated for a best-new-artist Grammy in 2003 after releasing third album Welcome Interstate Managers, boosted by hit Stacy's Mom. Tour plans include stops at the Coachella and Bonnaroo festivals.
